Two-week placements | 8 or 10 sessions per week | Accommodation provided
Fancy swapping the commute for a two-minute walk to work, with the Hebridean coastline on your doorstep? Broadbay Medical Practice is looking for locum GPs who’d like to come and work with us in the Western Isles for two weeks at a time — whether that’s a one-off visit or something more regular.
About us
We’re a friendly town practice in the heart of Stornoway, caring for around 6,000 patients across the town itself, the Point peninsula to the east, and the crofting townships north to Tolsta — so alongside town general practice you’ll see a genuine rural patient population.
Our practice-employed team includes four GPs, five Advanced Nurse Practitioners, general practice nurses, and a skilled and welcoming admin and reception team. We’re supported by a Health Board MDT of First Contact Physiotherapy, Primary Care Occupational Therapy and a Primary Care Pharmacy team. We value patient-centred care, believe in multi-disciplinary working, and are known as a friendly and supportive workplace — occasionally even a joyful one!
We’re five minutes’ drive from Western Isles Hospital, a rural general hospital with general surgery, general medicine, orthopaedics, gynaecology, paediatrics and psychiatry on-site, so clinical advice is always close at hand.
We place 5th-year medical students, host taster weeks for foundation doctors and GPSTs, and are working towards becoming a GP training practice.
The working day
- 20 face-to-face patient contacts per day (15min appointments), with separate slots for telephone calls, admin and lab results
- No home visits — most urgent visits are covered by the Health Board’s urgent and unscheduled care team
- The day starts at 08.50 with our Clan Gathering (our daily huddle), and the whole team meets for a multi-disciplinary clinical meeting first thing every Wednesday
- We use the Vision clinical system — the first practice in the Western Isles to do so
What we offer
- Sessional rate £300, with your choice of eight or ten sessions per week
- A two-bedroom apartment two minutes’ walk from the practice, provided free of charge for the duration of your stay
- Travel reimbursed — we cover flights or ferry tickets, and make a contribution towards fuel costs (we do not pay mileage)
Life in the Western Isles
Stornoway is the largest town in the Outer Hebrides — a working harbour town with shops, restaurants, an arts centre and a real sense of community, surrounded by some of the most spectacular beaches, moorland and coastline in Scotland. Two weeks here is a chance to practise good medicine at a humane pace, and to explore an extraordinary part of the world while you’re at it.
